After lockdowns, remote learning and pared-back formals one time-worn year twelve tradition held strong. This weekend the Class of 2020 flocked to seaside towns for NSW’s week of schoolies photographed for the Sydney Morning Herald.

Stephanie & Matt || Alstonvale NSW

Steph and Matt get hitched on a beautiful, rainy day in Alstonvale in the Northern Rivers in front of a small group family and friends and many more via zoom. Steph is the calmest, coolest bride I’ve seen yet. Two beautiful people with gorgeous friends and family to share their day with. Such a joy.

The ever delightful Jade and Jake get married at Harvest Newyrbar in the Northern Rivers. After having to postpone their wedding due to Covid in May these insanely beautiful people get hitched in October in front of small group of their closest friends and family. I can not tell you how much I LOVED documenting their day.

Still Life In Lockdown || Darwin Festival NT

When COVID-19 restrictions suddenly came into effect in March, Helen Orr and I found ourselves immediately without work and, like many others, staring down the barrel of a grim looking 2020.

Over three months capturing Still Life in Lockdown we saw many moments of inspiration and community spirit as people creatively adapted their businesses to keep their doors open and sporting groups, clubs and classes went online to stay connected with their communities. 

From different parts of the country (myself in Lismore and Hels in Darwin) we captured the lives of people living through this pandemic in self-isolation or under COVID-19 restrictions – from a safe 1.5m distance! Still Life in Lockdown features strangers, friends, neighbours and businesses in everyday moments documenting this difficult and strange time in history through the lens of hope and humanity. We were so excited to have the work shown as part of the Darwin Festival  on Larrakia land this year, I think it must have been the only festival in the whole of the country to go ahead.

Darwin Festival || Northern Territory

Darwin Festival 2020!! I can’t believe we made it to Darwin this year to photograph the beautiful festival. After cancelled flights, re-booked fights, border closures, travel restrictions, masks and the stress as to whether or not we were making the right decision to travel during the middle of Covid-19, we safely made it to my old hometown. Darwin Festival you never disappoint and I think you must have been the only festival in the whole of the world during August 2020.

Gai Taylor at home in Lismore, the daughter of captain P.G. Taylor, who made a historic Pacific crossing says the Catalina, part of Australia’s aviation history, should be protected. The daughter of the famous aviator who made an epic flight from Sydney to Chile in a Catalina aircraft hanging in the Powerhouse Museum fears it will be irreparably damaged by the institution’s relocation to Parramatta. Bushfires || Lismore NSW

We’ve been inside for days, the smoke is so thick and the house smells like a bush fire even with everything locked up. I can’t imagine what those are going through that are close to the fires. It feels like the apocalypse. How hot is the planet going to be when my little one is my age? I can’t even imagine. And why is our government not doing more? 

Professional Bull Riding || Grafton NSW

The PBR in Grafton was the first one I’d photographed in a year. I drove from Lismore through the bush fire smoke and when I got to Grafton it was blowing an absolute dusty gale. It’s sad that the fires skies are some of the best lit skies.

Dark Mofo || Hobart TAS

We took lil’ Emmylou on her first trip down to freezing cold Hobart, Tasmania for Dark Mofo for her papa’s bday. I bloody love Tasmania!! I ate a tonne of pastry from Pigeon Whole. I’ll dream of their chocolate croissants until we go back again. The Dirty Three played and were fucking incredible although Warren’s gentle distortion put Emmylou to sleep. 

My Best Friend’s Wedding || Melbourne VIC

My best mate got married!! To Jules!! Again….because there used to be some stupid law back in the day that meant marriage could only be between a man and woman. Great for me as I got to attend two weddings for Jules and Reid and now I legally have two best mates. I couldn’t be happier for them and I got to take a few cheeky pictures at their ceremony in Melbourne.
